Input to 
consists of a collection of source files, conventionally
suffixed `.tex', arranged into a tree where the links in the tree
are implemented by \input{} and \include{} directives.
In the case of a simple document, it is perfectly acceptable for this `tree'
to consist of a single file, of course. In examples that follow, it is
assumed that the root of the tree is the file root.tex.
