Lyrics

Wake up the dying
Don't wake up the dead
Change what your saying
Don't change what you've said
Now that its time that
I got out of bed

When I walk myself
Down sycamore street
The sun beats down
No shoes on my feet
And I stumble on
A daisy through concrete

Pink and brown babies
In pink stroller cars
Know that it's good
They don't care where they are
They know that home
Doesn't feel very far

When I walk myself
Down sycamore street
The sun beats down
No shoes on my feet
And I stumble on
A daisy through concrete

Here we go, oh yeah
That's how I like it

Airplane is flying up in the sky
Making a pattern
With the white lines
Looks like a heart
Or maybe a pie

When I walk myself
Down sycamore street
The sun beats down
No shoes on my feet
And I stumble on
A daisy through concrete
A daisy through concrete

Related Interview Extracts

In A Daisy Through Concrete you sing: 'Wake up the dying, don't wake up the dead'. 'Exactly. No time to lose, act now! Why should you think too much about the past? You can't change it. The present is more interesting above all. You can only learn about the past.' And?

Do you regret something? 'Yes. About the fact I'm still a workaholic. I married my music. I have to make things constantly. I remember what the ex-wife of Stevie Wonder said about him:

That man is sleeping with his taperecorder. I didn't understand it, but now I understand. I'm that way too.'

You don't have a family/household? 'No. I would like to, but... How should fit a woman in my life at the moment? The whole year 2000 is about touring, touring and again touring. A relationship simply don't fit.'

(??)

Yet he maintains that he doesn't need trauma to sustain his creative output. "I don't think that's all that my music's about. I'm not interested in painting one side of the picture, I'm interested in presenting the whole of life as I see it. People are always going to tag me as the guy who writes depressing songs, but they forget about songs such as "Daisy Through Concrete", which, even if I say so myself, is pure joy. I think that part is really important. Even in the sadder songs there's a lust for life; at least there is to me."

Favourite parts

I like how the first verse conveys this thought that you should try to change the present and not worry about the past.

Wake up the dying
Don't wake up the dead
Change what your saying
Don't change what you've said

How upbeat is the chorus? Wow. The whole idea of walking barefoot down the street on a sunny day and stumbling on a daisy growing through concrete is very uplifting. It's a great metaphor.

When I walk myself
Down sycamore street
The sun beats down
No shoes on my feet
And I stumble on
A daisy through concrete

I love the "airplane" verse. I think it's funny. I like how the song doesn't take itself too seriously.

Airplane is flying up in the sky
Making a pattern
With the white lines
Looks like a heart
Or maybe a pie
