What do all those medical words mean?
If you have ever heard a medical word and wondered what it meant, here is a list of common terms. A brief explanation is given, and if you click on the keyword you will hear a pronounciation of the phrase - especially useful for the longer words! | Genetic disorder | A disease passed to you by your birth parents. |
| Hepatolinticular degeneration | The medical name that some doctors use for Wilson's disease. |
| Kayser Fleischer rings | Small rings on the cornea of the eye, caused by deposits of copper. |
| Liver biopsy | A minor operation, under local anasthetic, to remove a sample of liver tissue. |
| Liver transplant | Giving a seriously ill patient a new liver to help them get better. |
| Penicillamine | Tablets that can help to control Wilson's disease. |
| Triantine | Another type of tablets that can help to control Wilson's disease. |
| Wilson's disease | The common name given to a rare disease which affects the liver. |
