Mobile Telephony Services

In this section we will look at some of the different services that users can access when using a mobile telephone, as well as some of the basic principles behind how mobile phone's themselves work. Before we can look at different functions that mobile phones can offer, we need to have a basic understanding of how the mobile phone works, and the network which it belongs to works as well.

In the most basic terms, a mobile phone is a radio, albeit a very sophisticated one! In the days before mobile phones there was a thing called a radio telephone which could be installed in a users car. This radio telephone then contacted the radio transmitter whenever a user tried to make a call. There was normally 1 radio transmmitter per city, which could only opperate on around 25 channels. Just like a TV, there can only be one thing on a given channel, so the number of conversations which could happen on a radio telephone system at once was severly limited, and as such the system was never hugely popular.
