Communications Tutorial

This tutorial has been designed as a way of explaining how some forms of communications technologies work. The tutorial uses a variety of different methods in an attempt to explain the various technologies, including short cartoons, images, etc. At the end of each of the modules there is a short quiz which you can take, to see how much you have learned from the tutorial.

What is communications technology?

When some sort of technology is used to help people keep in touch, share information or pass on ideas then this is communications technology. This can range from the very simple, like the first telephone, through to the very complex such as 3G mobile phones.

This tutorial is split into two different modules. The first of the modules looks at the landline telephone system, how it works and some of the services which can be offered on it. As well as this the module also looks at Voice Over IP, which is becoming more promenient.

The second module looks at mobile telephony. It begins by looking at the very early mobile systems which were limited to working within one city, and then looks at the different stages of development throughout the history of mobile telephony, up the the present Third Generation of mobile phones.

To access the modules click on one of the three tabs at the top of the page. To start the Communications module click on the Communications tab, and likewise for the Mobile Telephony module. You can return to this page at any point by clicking on the Homepage tab.
