Mathematics Prizes 2007-08
Following a long tradition, the Mathematics and Statistics group organised its traditional welcome back meeting for 3rd and 4th year students on Friday 19th September 2008. We took this opportunity to present prizes to three of our outstanding students.
The first one was departmentally sponsored and awarded to the best second year student, Linda Duncan. A special recognition was awarded to another second year student, Kirsty-Maree Douglas.
The main prize, for the most improved third year student, went to Christopher Newson. The prize was endowed by the family of late Dr Francis Bell, who worked in the department for 38 years, and sadly passed away in December 2006. This was a great opportunity for us all to remember Dr Bell and to bring his memory to the attention of our students. His wife, Helen, herself a retired member of the French Department here at the University, came along to meet the prize winner. She also presented Christopher with a pen, a gift from Dr Bell's family. She also said a few words about Francis and his enthusiasm for mathematics and encouraged students in pursuing their ambitions and interests.
The meeting is always a very fine occasion to get students and staff together before the start of semester, both in a formal and informal way.
